New Laser Impression Scanner

Posted on Dec 08, 2009

I can’t believe that Santa found me exactly what I had been looking for!
As many of you may realize we use 3D digital models for our clients these days. The advantages are that we don’t have to store model boxes for 30 years, track box numbers, etc., but if we need an actual model we can have one milled. The disadvantage is that we have to send the impressions to Calgary to a company called Orthobyte who then make a set of orthodontic study casts and then laser scan them, destroy them, and finally email them to me. Cool but long-winded.

Anyway, that’s where Santa comes in…... via Palm Springs! The staff and I were recently in Palm Springs for some R&R (oh I mean “Continuing Education”) and at the Exhibition Hall I found my new toy.  It’s made by Innovative Software and is a laser scanner that scans impressions and wax bites, and then the software adds the trimmed bases and occludes the teeth. The software then allows you to measure and manipulate the casts, and even extract teeth and perform set-ups.
This will save us a lot of hassle, keep things more under our control and reduce the number of impressions we need to take, because once the impression has been scanned, we can then pour it up and use the same one to make appliances or set-up indirect bonding etc. Very, very cool!!!
But for next Christmas I want an intra oral scanner!!!
Seasons Greetings.
